Memorial
May 28, 1974 - October 17, 2007
My beautiful grey Arabian mare, Silver Morn, whom we affectionately call Sugar, my precious friend.
In earlier years, we found ourselves competing in English, Western and Dressage. Sugar was a very versatile horse. She performed successfully in all of the above. She was also a pretty good jumper and, like her mom, a very good barrel racer. Happily, we brought home many ribbons, including those in the Championship category.
But, truthfully, we were both too 'free spirited' for the show ring.
We preferred riding like the wind - trail riding is what we always went back to; we loved the feel of the wind as it blew through Sugar's mane and my hair - it was pure freedom! We had such great fun together along with some amazing experiences!
To you Sugar, my dear one, affectionately called "My Sugar Plum Fairy":
Sugar, you are the love of my life; you are my forever and emotional friend and I adore you in every way.
May 28, 2007 you turned age 33 (and to you age meant nothing); we have been together since you were 2, a 31 year partnership.
For 31 years you have been my best friend with a bond that is exceptionally rare - our forever bond is like no other and that shall never change.
Never could I imagine a day when you would not be by my side, but now the day has come and it is so painful.
I miss your silky mane;
I miss your sweet brown eyes full of such amazing and ancient wisdom;
I miss your warm whinny you always greeted me with;
I miss your strength and emotional support;
I miss your elegance and beauty - you are so regal;
I miss your love and your gentle soul;
I miss our long warm hugs and how you smelled of such sweetness when I nuzzled your soft neck;
I miss everything you are.
You have taught me to be courageous and strong, and so much more - you have given me "horse energy".
I know you will always be with me and that I will be with you again one day, my dearest. We love you, Sugar, with all our heart, where you will remain forever. You are our sweetheart - Gary and I love you more then words can ever say.

Sugar's shoes with Swarovski crystals added; a true keepsake crafted by our dearest friend Karen. Thank you Karen. Words cannot express how comforting it is to hold Sugar's shoes. Every night I sleep with them under my pillow.
Heartfelt sentiments received from around the globe:
- Only those who know you well understand the bond you two had. They know neither is complete without the other...there is no stronger connection then a girl and her horse, and especially in your case... - Gary (my wonderful husband) (Vancouver, Canada)
- Thank you for bringing her into my life along with your friendship. I would have done anything for her... She is so sadly missed here. - Karen (Sugar's caretaker - Fort Langley, Canada)
- Sweet Sugar..... - Susan (Port Kells, Canada)
- I know that she is flying with the angels and will continue to teach all of us from another plane. Sugar was a wonderful soul - an old soul - and a kind and loving soul. - Jeannie (Ottawa, Canada)
- Sugar was a delightful horse and it was my pleasure to have known her. - Linda (West Vancouver, Canada)
- A lovely tribute to a lovely mare. Cortez (her famous sire pictured below), was a one of a kind; and a horse one is lucky to have once in a life time. I was very fortunate to have had him the years that I did. - Rick (Oregon)
- She was a dear and was your best friend. - Shari (Calgary, Canada)
- She was an amazing force for healing and goodness on the planet. When you are blessed to share your life with such a special animal companion, the loss is profound. Her expression of unconditional love for the two of you was a gift from God. - Zoe (Vancouver, Canada)
- She is so gorgeous and loving. - Zeina (Beirut, Lebanon)
- Glad we met Sugar and she will always be remembered. She'll be in a special place now. - Celeste (Burnaby, Canada)
- I feel it an honour to have known Sugar and have been such a positive part of her life. To me the greatest love is the love of a treasured pet. Thank you for sharing Sugar with me. I know your loss is immeasurable. I am so sorry for your loss of your dear friend. With such a great love comes the pain when they part and leave us here on earth. - Stevie (Aldergrove, Canada)
- I will always remember going with you to see Sugar. - Heather (North Vancouver, Canada)
- Thank you for allowing me the honour to have been a part of her life. - Julie (Maple Ridge, Canada)
- Sugar, thank you for sharing your absolute love, trust and energy with us, for teaching us to trust in whom we are, and most importantly, to understand unconditional love. - Cher (South Africa)
Sugar touched many hearts worldwide; sentiments in the form of phone calls and e-mails were received from her many friends in Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, USA, Central and South America, Spain...to name a few. Thank you all!!!
Memorial Marker - silver horse show, red rose for forever love, halter and beads from many birthday parties.
The song "You've Got A Friend", says it all - she was always there for me - always my friend. Here are the words:
"When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you got to do is call
And I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You've got a friend
If the sky above you
Should turn dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind should begin to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud, yeah
Soon I'll be knocking upon your door
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running, oh yes I will
To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you got to do is call
And I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
People can be so cold
They'll hurt you, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh yeah, but don't you let them
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you got to do is call
Lord I'll be there, yes I will
You've got a friend."
The following is a song I wrote for Sugar a very long time ago - it goes to the tune of "Camptown Races".
SUGAR'S SONG
"Long white mane and silky tail,
Sugar, Sugar,
Arab blood and Morgan too,
Sugar you're so fine.
Legs that move with grace,
Eyes so dark and kind,
Sugar you are beautiful,
You are my special find."
Yes, we had a birthday party for her the following year, May 28, 2008. She would have been 34. Always celebrating 'my girl'.
